What do you think is a good zoom lens to replace the kit lens for a Canon 7D?
What do you think is a great zoom lens for the Canon 7D, to replace the 18-135mm kit lens that it comes with?
I’m a novice and have been shooting with the kit lens. Or, is the kit good enough? I just want something with better aperture range, speed, lighting, etc.
What makes a “great zoom” is totally subjective. It depends on what you shoot. However, you are 100% correct in that a faster aperture is a definite plus. More important than that is a CONSTANT aperture. Variable aperture lenses drive me stark raving insane, and I totally refuse to suffer trying to use the aggravating things. So pick a zoom range that you think is the best fit for your needs, and be sure it has a constant aperture. The L series of lenses are Canon’s best, and most of them all have constant apertures. Keep in mind, your camera has a 1.6 “crop factor” so you have to take this into account with any lens you purchase. The Canon 24 – 70 2.8L lens is regarded as one of the best lenses in existence, from any manufacturer. This gains you noting in zoom range, but the fast aperture and improvement in optical quality offset that, in my opinion.
Also, consider using prime lenses, (non zoom). These have MUCH faster apertures, are lighter and smaller, and have superior optics to zoom lenses. Of course, you could buy a nice house for what a few fast, prime, L lenses would cost!
Lens choice is always a balancing act between cost, need, desire.
